As part of a regular series I aim to identify unlikely places around the city where you can see art, both intentional and otherwise. We obviously all know that art can be found in museums, galleries, street fairs and theatres, but did you know you can also discover a broad array of art forms at the airport?
A few weeks ago, I attended a fashion show right in the middle of baggage claim in Terminal Two. There was a catwalk and fabulousness everywhere, but there were also security announcements overhead, businesspeople departing and tourists arriving all wondering what was going on in America’s Finest City. If California didn’t have a reputation for being where “the gays” live before this, it certainly does now!
That Art Meets Fashion event is just one example of a whole schedule of free performances that take place at the Terminal Two baggage claim on different Fridays of the month. In addition, permanent and rotating public art exhibits can be found throughout the airport from large and dramatic statements to intimate and subtle elements that may require numerous visits to discover. You can even propose a project yourself.
So, next time you and that special someone are looking for something different to do why not go to the airport, listen to some Latin jazz, watch planes fly into the sunset and remember why you live in such a great city.
