Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief at Vogue magazine, is the latest in a string of prominent New Yorkers to speak out in support of gay marriage.

Vogue reports that Wintour added her name to a marriage equality advocates list that so far includes Barbara Bush, celebrity chef Mario Batali and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg by recording a video testimonial for the Human Rights Campaign effort on behalf of same-sex marriage. In the recording for HRC’s ‘New Yorkers for Marriage Equality,’ Wintour cuts to the chase:

“As far as I’m concerned,” she says, “having the right to say ‘I Do’ is as fundamental as the right to vote.”

HRC Senior New York Strategist Brian Ellner responded to Wintour’s statement in press release, saying that, “as the preeminent voice in the global fashion industry and a publishing icon, Anna Wintour represents the best of New York.”

In keeping with Wintour’s status in the fashion world, Ellner made a nod to the timelessness of a cause as critical as equal rights.

“She knows the difference between a passing fad and an enduring brand,” Ellner concluded. “Equality is part of the New York brand.”
