Gay Couple - LGBT San Diego Gay & Lesbian MagazineA recent study reveals Americans are generally supportive of homosexuality, with an overwhelming majority of support for those aged younger than 50. Nearly 69 percent of those younger than age 30 support gay lifestyles. The findings come on behalf of the Pew Research Center, an independent, non-partisan public opinion research organization.

While Americans still waver over same-sex marriage, the findings may be promising indicators for future LGBT rights as the younger populations begin to fill government seats and take office. Right now, 45 percent of the country favors the legalization of gay and lesbian marriage, while 46 are opposed. The study also reveals that opposition has taken a fall – by 19 points – since 1996, suggesting gay rights including gay marriage may be close in reach.

Religious groups are also in favor of gay lifestyles including Catholics who agree 66 percent of the time and Protestants who agree homosexuality should be accepted 65 percent of the time.

According to the study, gay parenting has improved significantly among many Americans. The study found that 35 percent of Americans still view gay marriage as a negative – improving significantly since 2007 when 50 percent of Americans had viewed it negatively at that time.

While the LGBT community and allies for the group await legalized gay marriage, the group’s findings suggest a nearby future for gay equality.
