TENNESSEE – A state Senate committee has approved a bill that will prohibit teachers from discussing homosexuality in kindergarten through eighth-grade classrooms.
The legislation (SB49) known as the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill, was introduced by Republican Senator Stacey Campfield, who has been pushing for the law for six years.
As introduced, the bill would have put into law a declaration that it is illegal to discuss homosexuality prior to the ninth grade.
Ben Byers from the Tennessee Equality Project said, “‘The Don’t Say Gay’ bill raises all kinds of issues about anti-gay bias, free speech and government overreach. It limits what teachers and students are able to discuss in the classroom. It means they can’t talk about gay issues or sexuality even with students who may be gay or have gay family.”
……So? Think about it. If this law was passed, clearly the majority wanted it. This is not just that the majority is not gay, or hate gays. This is that the majority does not want to have this talked about in school. I’m sure many people don’t want ANY kind of sexuality talked about in schools.
