Many heroes and two meanies

Daniel Hernandez Jr. was featured on the cover of Arizona’s “‘N Touch” magazine.

Tonight (Thursday, April 28) I will be one of your waiters for Dining Out for Life at the Bangkok Thai Bistro (540 University Ave.). After that, I’m off to the airport.

The new Queens of Mean

Roll over Leona Helmsley – there are new Queens of Mean that make you look like a sweetheart during your days of terror!

Last week, openly gay City Councilman Carl DeMaio snubbed and insulted the mayor’s daughter Lisa Sanders at a community benefit. I told Lisa not to be upset as DeMaio has become a plain ’ole bully and meanie; she isn’t the only one he has insulted.

Let’s not forget DeMaio’s infamous attack on our GLBT community leaders in his anti-“Golden 30” remarks at the Diversionary Theatre, his insults to City Commissioner Bruce Abrams and community activist Jim Ginelli, and his public attack on Senator Chris Kehoe at the Republican State Convention.

Since Carl became lovers with Jonathan Hale, he has become even more mean. DeMaio and Hale seem to have established their very own Nixon-like “enemies list.” Many of us will never forget how both DeMaio and Hale told countless people how they would destroy the late publisher Michael Portantino and put him out of business.

DeMaio has become so unpopular within his own GLBT community that at every community event; when gay public officers are announced, he gets hardly any applause.

There is even a dirtydemaio.com website of people who dislike him. Even the president of the Deputy Sherriff’s Association blasted him in his monthly newsletter for DeMaio’s rudeness and texting throughout a police officer’s funeral (Carl is seemingly always texting at council meetings and civic events).

But it’s his lover, Hale, who has become the more evil and mean, though he always has had that reputation. He even stupidly left a message on my answering machine threatening to destroy me (I kept the recording).

Now, why am I bringing this all up? Many of you have said it was I who brought DeMaio into the community and he publicly called me his “mentor” and “mother” (I’m booking us on the Murray Polvich show for a DNA test!).

I’m seriously considering an offer I’ve received from a mainstream media outlet to do a major article entitled “The Carl DeMaio and Jonathan I know …” Stay tuned for my decision.

Honoring a hero

Thank you, AFFL players

The great football players of the San Diego American Flag Football League donated 300 – yes, 300 – Easter egg baskets to the eighth annual children’s Easter egg hunt this past Sunday at Trolley Park. Many of the team members even made their own baskets! I dropped by Saturday at the AFFL games in La Jolla and had a wonderful time. A special thank you to AFFL Commissioner Mike Paganelli who stopped by the children’s Easter egg hunt. You’re awesome, AFFL members!

Lei Lounge celebrates fifth anniversary

Lei Lounge (4622 Park Blvd.) has won almost every restaurant and food critic’s awards and praise since it opened five years ago. It reminds me of those Miami Beach hot spots and its patio, cabanas, food and atmosphere are one of the most fabulous on the west coast. Last week Lei Lounge celebrated its fifth anniversary party and I landed a cabana for the evening. Joining me were City Councilman Todd Gloria, Schoolboard Member Kevin Beiser, City Commissioner Bruce Abrams, Hillcrest Business Association President Nick Moede, Harvey Milk Foundation members A.J. Turner and Allan Spyere. We had a great time with drinks and appetizers. A special thank you to owner Billy Weiss and managers Richard and Kevin.

Stop by Lei Lounge to learn why it’s the talk and toast of the town. Absolutely fabulous!
