Antony Cotton, star of the hit British soap opera Coronation Street, told reporters for New magazine that he is pleased and proud that the show will be depicting gay parenting in a positive light in the upcoming Easter episode.
Cotton, who plays Sean Tully on the show, explained that his gay character will be reunited with his former partner Marcus (Charlie Condou) and son Dylan before moving back in with them to help raise the 3-year-old child as a family.
Cotton noted the prosaic yet progressive appeal of the episode, saying “it’s two men pushing a buggy down a street – it’s modern life. And if nothing else it will give people something to talk about.”
He went on to say that he doubts audiences will be shocked at images of same-sex parents on the popular show, stating that such views are “terribly old-fashioned” and that “gay people are the same as anybody else.”
“As long as two people are happy and offer a child unconditional love, I don’t see what the problem is,” Cotton concluded.
The actor, who is himself openly gay, is a vocal supporter of LGBT equality groups in his native England.
