After incurring various consequences after uttering a homophobic slur at a L.A. Lakers game — including a steep fine and the outrage of GLAAD representatives and LGBT advocates – Kobe Bryant and fellow members of the Lakers have joined forces to preach a message of LGBT tolerance in a new public service announcement.
At one point in the video, Kobe says, “There are all kinds of different people in the world. That’s what makes the world special.”
He also notes, in conjunction with his teammates, that “whether someone is different than you in race, ethnicity, political beliefs, religion…or sexual orientation…words could be hurtful.”
Bryant concludes by urging anyone tempted to use such words to “replace them with understanding, compassion and acceptance.”
“Let’s make this a better world for all of us,” he says.
