After LGBT Weekly’s coverage of anti-discrimination initiatives in San Diego schools earlier this week, state-wide progress in the form of Senate success for both the FAIR Education Act and Seth’s Law signals further victory for LGBT equality activists.
Today, the California Senate passed the Fair, Accurate, Inclusive and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act, a piece of legislation that would require schools to teach LGBT history in conjunction with social science instruction, in a 23-14 vote. The act also includes anti-discrimination protections for LGBT individuals to prevent bias in activities and instructional materials.
The FAIR act’s success in the Senate follows swift on the heels of yesterday’s California Assembly Education Committee 7-3 vote in favor of Seth’s Law. The law, officially known as AB 9, sets forth comprehensive guidelines regarding bullying in schools and discrimination based on sexual identification.
Both pieces of legislation would mark significant strides towards LGBT equality in education for the state’s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender population.
