The San Diego Democratic Club has joined 81 other groups seeking suspension of policies that would require deportation for non-US citizens in same-sex marriages currently pending legality.
As the Court debates the constitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act, individuals in such relationships are not yet legally married and therefore face the threat of deportation. The San Diego Democratic Club, an affiliate of National Stonewall Democrats, vocalized their objection to the deportation policy by sending letters to Janet Napolitano, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Thomas W. Hussey, Director of the Office of Immigration Litigation, and Juan Osuna, Acting Director of the Executive Office for Immigration Review.
Doug Case, President of the SDDC, said that the group is “honored to have been asked to join this effort, “ and explained that “the government’s treatment of LGBT relationships involving a non-US member starkly points out the discrimination inherent in DOMA – and LGBT equality is the core mission of the San Diego Democratic Club.”
