MALTA – A transgender man in Malta has won the right to have his birth certificate changed to “male.”
The man, whose name cannot be published by court order, was born on May 22, 1984 as a girl, but said in his writ that he had “male inclinations, behavior and orientation both psychologically and externally” since childhood.
He later underwent gender reassignment surgery in Belgrade, Serbia, where he took on the male gender “irreversibly.” Maltese law recognizes the rights of people who undergo gender reassignment surgery to change their gender on their birth certificates.
Justice Joseph Azzopardi granted his request to change his birth certificate and his name and ordered the public registry to make the changes.
