Happy White Party week! It’s our second New Year’s celebration. Some people get so messed up they need to start a new year after that. And I speak from experience. Lord knows … I had my party animal days.
New York, New York
I just got back from my trip to the Big Apple and it was amazing. On my way to New York I started looking at what was on Broadway because I can’t go to New York and not do Broadway every night. Lucky me: La Cage Aux Folles and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert had just opened. I was in heaven!
So, Saturday I went to the half-price ticket booth and got orchestra tickets to La Cage for the 2 p.m. show. The play was great and as good as I expected. It was good to see Harvey Fierstein perform, but I do have to say that his singing wasn’t the best. Christopher Sieber, on the other hand, was amazing. During that musical I learned a new word: Orthodykes. Jewish lesbians. I thought it was very funny and clever.
On to the next musical on Sunday. My friend Coco LaChine got us fourth-row orchestra seats for Priscilla and they were the best seats ever. Priscilla was probably one of the best musicals I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen a lot of them. The music was great, singing was superb and the sets and costumes were mind-blowing. The men … just gorgeous. I couldn’t focus on anything but their abs and ass.
My two favorite lines from Priscilla were: “If I were to give the world an enema, I think I just found the point of entry!” and “Oh, how typical! Just when you are getting so close, you run out of battery!”
I was happy to see that we had two major gay musicals that are doing well.
White Party tips
I used to go to the White Party every year, back when it was good. Over the years, it has been going downhill – with the prices higher and not worth the lineup of entertainment that is being offered. The only thing that looks appealing to me this year is the closing party with Rosabel and performances by Wynter Gordon and Natalia Kills.
My favorite part was always the pool parties. Those are always fun and not as tragic. I’ve had some tragic moments in the past (and I am glad that they are in the past). Speaking from my own experience, if you are going to use it, then double wrap it! Transmission rate of STDs in Palm Springs during White Party is very high. Don’t be stupid!
Not a White Party fan?
If you are not a White Party fan, here are some options for you to still party and have fun in town.
Rich’s is doing its sixth annual Black Party with DJ Taj this Saturday and Numbers is doing a Glow Stick party with DJ Will Z. If you are Latino or into Latinos, then your best bet is the Club Papi party at Spin.
Girls’ gone wild
I finally stopped by Repent at Rich’s this past Thursday and it was a lot of fun. I felt like I was at coyote ugly. The bartenders were hot and sexy and the shows were very entertaining. I was surprised to see how many girls were out late on a Thursday night. If you haven’t been there then you are missing out on a fun night with the ladies!
Gaga or Britney
I decided to go to the Lady Gaga concert last minute and I was able to get some cheap good seats. She was nuts! Her singing was amazing and the show very entertaining. I was happy to see that during the whole show she was always an advocate to our community. Always talking about equality and gay rights.
She made some comments during the show about writing her own songs and about never lip-syncing. I think she was referring to Britney Spears who was supposedly lip-syncing in L.A. and the people were not happy about it.
Speaking of Britney, Rich’s is doing a Britney themed party on April 15 with Britney remixes on the main room and Britney videos in the front room. Free raffle with Britney CDs, DVDs and free VIP bottle service.
Farewell to Spin
After a long time on the ups and downs, Spin is changing their Saturdays to a more “hetero” format as stated on Facebook. In my opinion, it’s not the distance that makes that venue a hard one. Come on, a lot of our “gays” drive 100 miles to party in WeHo. It was the high cover, expensive and small drinks and a large venue that is hard to fill, so it always looks empty. The remodel also made the place brighter which is not necessarily fit for an after hours club.
I have great memories from Spin (back when it was Montage) but everything must come to an end. And just like Cher, Spin is on for one more farewell tour Saturday April 16 with DJ/Producer Manny Lehmann. Stop by and say goodbye to that legendary nightclub.
