April 2, R&B/rap artist Estelle performs live at the Saturday night main event during Girl Bar Dinah Shore Week in Palm Springs.
Estelle won a 2009 Grammy Award for “American Boy” (with Kanye West) in the category for Best Rap/Song Collaboration. For her latest hit, “One Love,” she collaborated with DJ/Producer and musical mastermind Dave Guetta.
We caught up with Estelle while she was in London, preparing for her upcoming desert performance.
LGBT Weekly: What was the last song that you listened to that you honestly enjoyed?
Estelle: “You Be Killin ‘Em” by Fabolous. It’s been a song that grew on me. Now it’s my sort of getting ready for the club song.
What are you currently listening to in your iPod/mp3 player?
My new album! Top secret and due out soon, so I’m listening for flaws.
If you had to pick one artist to sing with dead or alive who would it be?
Ella Fitzgerald. She’s the best to me and has inspired me as a singer.
Is there one celebrity that you are still “star struck” by?
Mary J. Blige. She’s another huge influence on my career and life
What can we expect from your show?
Just fun. I hate to be too rehearsed and choreographed, so I let things fly and fall where they may. It makes for a more interesting show.
Give us five words that would accurately describe an Estelle Experience on stage.
Fun. Different. Loud. Exciting. Real.
How does it feel to perform in front of a nearly all female audience in Palm Springs? Are you doing anything different in your show because of that?
I’ve never done an almost all female audience, so I’m sure it’ll be an experience. We’ll have to wait and see.
