Discover ancient Egypt

The Museum of Man has one of the most important ancient Egyptian collections in the United States. The exhibition Ancient Egypt features hieroglyphic stone carvings, jewelry, pottery, amulets and everyday objects, all documented by archaeologists. The exhibition also includes coffin masks, figurines, and mummified falcons. Seven painted wooden coffins are currently on display. The most extraordinary of these is an extremely rare Ptolemaic child’s coffin – only six others are known to exist worldwide. This young girl’s coffin is a cultural treasure reflecting the devotion ancient Egyptians had to their religious customs and beliefs. Two authentic Egyptian mummies are also featured in the exhibition. CAT scans and x-rays on display provide an inside look at what can be learned from mummies without unwrapping or damaging their remains.

San Diego Museum of Man, 1350 El Prado, in Balboa Park, adult tickets $12.50, open 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., 619-239-2001, museumofman.org.

Wings of Gold

The Coronado Historical Association is participating in a national celebration of the Centennial of Naval Aviation with the themed museum exhibit, Wings of Gold: Coronado and Naval Aviation.

In early 1911, the United States Navy asked pioneer aviator and inventor Glenn Curtiss to train one of its officers to fly. Curtiss chose a sandy, scrub-covered island in San Diego Bay as the location and Coronado became the birthplace of naval aviation. An original pilot’s uniform, the helmet of one the first female naval aviators, a model plane built by Glenn Curtiss and a national insignia that flew on aircraft from 1919-1940 are examples of items that will be on view.
