A love revolution at Moxie Theatre

The great thing about covering the arts for the San Diego LGBT Weekly is that I get to learn about all kinds of things happening in town – and then share them with you! One conversation leads to another, and before you know it I find out about Moxie Theatre and its current production of Or, “a witty, sexy Restoration romp” by Liz Duffy Adams that the New York Times calls “playful, funny and inventive.”

As I learned, Moxie Theatre was founded in 2005 by a group of performers and directors intent on creating diverse images of women via theatre and expanding the idea of what is feminine. Moxie primarily produces the work of female playwrights and is “dedicated to discovering classics of the future”; therefore Or, making its debut in San Diego might be one of them.

Fresh from its recent off-Broadway success Or is an imaginative account of Aphra Behn, considered to be the first female playwright, a poet and a spy. In this “delicious” production, she is paired up in a trio of romantic scenarios on the night she tries to pen the play that will secure her career. But obstacles await; Behn’s front door keeps swinging as King Charles II, Nell Gwynne, double-agent William Scott and a host of other characters pass through it, three of them played by local superstar David McBean.

Or, runs until April 23 with a pay what you can night on Monday, April 4. So, summon up some Moxie of your own and find out where Aphra hid Nell before the two “got it on,” how exactly she “entertained” King Charles II, her other lover and what becomes of William Scott?

Moxie Theatre is located at 6663 El Cajon Blvd., Ste. N, in Rolando. For tickets, call 858-598-7620.
