MARYLAND – Maryland’s House of Delegates has ended their gay marriage debate by rejecting four amendments. As reported by the Washington Post, the House narrowly rejected a bill that would have made gay marriage legal, only after voters rejected a ballot measure to ban gay marriages in the state constitution.
The Maryland House also rejected, 86-54, a bill that would have given teachers and students the choice to not participate in sexual education programs because of religious beliefs where gay relationships were mentioned.
Also, a bill which would have allowed religious-affiliated adoption agencies to refuse services to gay couples was rejected. Opponents to the amendment had argued it violated an anti-discrimination law.
The House also denied a name change of the “Civil Marriage Protection Act” to the “Same-sex Marriage Act.”
A final vote on the same-sex marriage bill is expected later in the week.
