UNITED KINGDOM – Pride London organizers say plans are on course to host WorldPride in 2012 and the event will not be affected by the 2012 Olympics. World-Pride will be in early July and the Olympics will not start until the end of that month.
Glastonbury organizer Michael Eavis announced last year that the festival would take a break in 2012 because the vast majority of portable toilets would be in use at the Olympics, along with police staff shortages. But, Pride London spokesman Colm Howard-Lloyd told PinkNews.co.uk that Pride organizers had been discussing WorldPride plans with local authorities for the last few years and there was no reason why the event would not go ahead.
“A special committee has been set up to consider the logistics of the event. Realistically, we expect to double our numbers – around the two million mark,” Howard-Lloyd said.
Pride 2011 will be Saturday, July 2 and Howard-Lloyd dismissed suggestions of financial problems. He said, “We’re just waiting to sign a contract with a headline sponsor, which should be a relief and means we’ll be able to get a lot done in the next few years.”
