NCIS episode strikes a more supportive note

The Jan. 18 episode of NCIS, “Recruited,” was remarkably supportive of the LGBT community, integrating the recent repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell into the plot. This recent legislative change gave the show an opening to discuss the topic and the way it played out exceeded even the shows own high writing standards.

In the episode, NCIS is called in to investigate the death of Navy recruit Jeffrey Craig. Craig is found dead in a high school stairwell after a college fair.

Autopsy results determine that he was killed by a blunt force trauma to the head by what appeared to be inflicted by a boot.

Amy, Craig’s sister, reveals that her brother was gay and recently started dating a teacher at the high school.

The plot unfolds as the NCIS team gradually uncovers the truth. This particular story did not lead to a high tension crime scene investigation, as in some episodes, but more to a broader discussion. The episode helped illustrate the mistreatment of Craig because he was gay. It also highlighted the fact that he had devoted his life to his country, but lost his life due to discrimination. The subject matter was handled sensitively and well for a show that has not been particularly supportive of the LGBT community.

Without giving away any more of the story, if you did not see the show, it is well worth a view. Visit www.tvfanatic.com to watch the complete episode.
