Before Christmas Jason Mraz popped the question to Tristan Prettyman, but he told attendees of the Concert to Benefit the American Foundation for Equal Rights that he won’t walk down the aisle until everyone can – and that includes gay and lesbian couples.
Mraz told Us Weekly, “We both feel that in our engagement, we have a union that’s really special and can’t be broken. It’s a sacred bond. The wedding would be nice for our family, our friends, our community – our moms especially – and so it puts us in the fight. We can’t get married until [gay] marriage is legal and equal… I think giving people the right to marry will be a huge movement in civil rights.”
Mraz wasn’t the only singer to speak out at the benefit in a big way. Elton John announced that he supported same-sex marriage, a reversal of sorts from his 2009 statement in which he said that he was satisfied with his civil union with partner David Furnish, and said, “F**k you,” to marriage equality opponents.
John said, “As a gay man. I think I have it all. I have a wonderful career, a wonderful life. I have my health, I have a partner of 17 years and I have a son. And you know what, I don’t have everything, because I don’t have the respect of people like the church, and people like politicians who tell me that I am not worthy or that I am ‘less than’ because I am gay.”
