A big San Diego welcome to all our visiting “Royalty” from all over the U.S.A., Canada and Mexico, here for San Diego’s 39th annual Coronation of our new Emperor and Empress…
Show your support of the Imperial Court this Saturday!
Did you know that the Imperial Court de San Diego gave out over $74,000 in financial grants in 2008…over $54,000 in 2009 and over $60,000 in 2010…the Court has no paid staff or office expenses, so about 90 percent of almost every dollar the Court raises goes to LGBT and other causes and organizations. So you would think that every organization we support would show their appreciation and respect by attending our annual Coronation Ball. But many don’t and some even don’t send a “thank you” letter for donations….in fact straight organizations seem to be more appreciative. So I hope our community leaders and non-profits are reading this and that they will come to our 39th annual Coronation Ball at The Center, 6 pm sharp (‘til 9:30 pm) and celebrate another year long reign of noble deeds that have been done by the Imperial Court’s membership of LGBT and straight members…thank you…for more info on tickets etc. call (619) 254-6372 or (619) 540-8727.
Carl DeMaio votes against Bob Nelson
First City Councilman Carl DeMaio would not support Todd Gloria for City Council President and now he voted against community leader Bob Nelson for Port Com-mis-sioner (Bob won 6-2)!!!
What is wrong with Carl?? I know that Carl has attended Tea Party rallies and is a conservative Republican, but I did not think he had completely drunk their Kool-Aid! Bob Nelson is one of our city’s most respected civic leaders, as well as a tireless LGBT rights advocate, who is married to his lifelong partner and gives countless checks to charities, AIDS agencies, LGBT non-profits and civil rights groups. Our new Port Commissioner Bob Nelson is also the Chair of the San Diego Citizens Revenue Review and Eco-nomic Com-petitiveness Commis-sion, as well as the San Diego Convention Center. Bob Nelson was endorsed for Port Commissioner by California State Controller John Chiang, the Environ-mental Health Coalition, the League of Conservation Voters, City Fire Fighters and the list goes on and on…and yet Carl DeMaio voted against Nelson, also a past Chairman of the LGBT Center Board of Directors.
I remember when then Mayor Dick Murphy wanted to appoint me to the City’s Charter Commission and I said no thank you, but Bob Nelson was a much better and more qualified person for the mayor to appoint. Shame on you Carl, your vote was a disservice to not only Bob, but our community and city…Period.
Is San Diego ready for a gay mayor…Yes!
The major cities of Houston, Texas and Portland, Oregon have elected openly gay mayors, and so have some smaller cities. I read a local blogger article that said, “Is San Diego ready for a gay mayor???”…well, yes it is and it’s ready for a Latino, African American and Asian Pacific Islander mayor…all which we have not had in the history of our city. And now, three LGBT San Diegan office holders are being mentioned as major frontrunners among eight other possible candidates. I’ve had the honor to have served the last five mayors of San Diego and I know that all three possible mayoral candidates are extremely well qualified. State Senator Chris Kehoe is one of California’s most respected office holders and would make an outstanding mayor of the people, but I’m afraid her eight year period on the city council could come back to haunt her when it comes to “Charger football guarantees” and pensions, among other issues.
Former Superior Court Judge, and now District Attorney, Bonnie Du-manis has completely taken her office from being one full of scandal and controversy to one of the best district attorney offices in the nation….she would be a no-nonsense mayor during these hard difficult times….the iron hand/velvet glove approach.
Yes, City Councilman Carl DeMaio is controversial and has at times an “attitude” problem, but he lives and breathes government and at times can be brilliant, and is one hard working office holder, but unlike Kehoe and Dumanis has no history with San Diego’s Latino, African American and Asian communities…could he truly be a mayor for all San Diegans???
INS patrolling bar “Latino Nites?”
I have received word from some local bar owners that sometimes the Border Patrol, with their green trucks and uniforms, park nearby during “Latino Nites” and ask for identification, especially from Latino transgenders…. I have notified some of our Congressional delegation about these reports.
March on Washington in 2012??
The discussion about another LGBT National March on Washington is growing more and more…some feel 2012 is important because it’s an election year and we need to get out the vote and make sure our issues are focused upon. What do you think??? Please feel free to email me at nicolemrsd@aol.com, or write P.O. Box 33915, San Diego 92163.
I am very interested in your feedback before I make an upcoming decision…Feel free to let me know why you think there should be a LGBT March in 2012 or why there shouldn’t be…thanks!
